What Kind of Event
Our selection aims to encompass a range of art forms and events with a connection to reading, writing and the spoken word and to reflect the diversity of the region.
Events in the last few years have included readings, discussions, performances, poetry, dramatised readings, new comedy, storytelling, events with music and/or film and dance, short stories, launches of new collections and off-the-wall events, including a musical about the Brontes and an event exploring ’swim hiking’ which took place in the River Wharfe.
The Fringe Briefing
All selected groups must attend a mandatory Fringe Briefing in September 2012.
Timings and Venues
- The majority of Fringe events last 60 minutes but you are welcome to propose shorter events. It is difficult to programme any longer events.
- Many Fringe events take place at Ilkley Playhouse between other events (at weekends) or after other events during the week and on Saturdays. Typical times are 9pm and 5pm.
- Proposals for Fringe events that take place elsewhere, for example on Ilkley Moor, on the bandstand or in local pubs or your own venue (in Ilkley), are also welcome.
We work with each chosen group/individual to identify a suitable venue and the right date and time, so that it compliments other events.
Encouraging an Audience
The Festival makes every effort to attract an audience for the Fringe, but just like the Edinburgh Festival, the size of your audience will largely depend on your efforts.
Fringe event organisers are strongly advised to alert friends, family and supporters and do all they can to attract an audience. Audiences range from 3 people to 150….
What We Provide
For each Fringe event the Festival provides the following:
- A suitable venue, although your own venue (in Ilkley) if relevant, can be considered
- Technical support where appropriate and possible
- Publicity, both in our festival brochure and in our press releases
- A steward where steward support is needed (eg. in a Festival venue or to guide people to an outdoor venue).
The Finances
Fringe performers are not offered any payment or expenses, we do not charge them to perform and admission to Fringe events for the audience is free.
Audience members are not required to book in advance, and just turn up on the day/night.
Technical Support.
Technical support must be agreed in advance and will be limited to basic sound requirements and the use of existing lighting, and a digital projector/screen if needed and available in the venue.
Get in and get out time is minimal – 15-30 mins.
You will be required to return a simple Technical Support Request Form.
