Ilkley Literature Festival Fringe are hugely excited to be launching Chain Reactions – a collaborative, cross-artform digital project that encourages participants to develop and stretch their creative work in new ways, inspiring and enthusing each other, and giving audiences a fresh and exciting experience.

Chain Reactions will include three stages:

Stage 1:
Five new pieces of work will be commissioned across a range of art forms. These will be made available to view on our website and social media channels.
Stage 2:
People living across the Yorkshire region will be challenged to get creative and respond to work featured in Stage 1, using a different artform than the original piece.
Stage 3:
The chain reaction will continue and people living across the Yorkshire region will be encouraged to respond to works that were produced in Stage 2.

We are now looking for Stage 1 applicants to kickstart the project.

In Stage 1 we are looking for proposals for creative provocations. We will commission five applicants based in Yorkshire to produce finished pieces of work for a fee of £200. The works should respond to the word ‘Spark’ and can take any of the artforms listed below:

  • Dance
  • Spoken word
  • Film
  • Music
  • Poetry (max. 20 lines)
  • Stage plays/monologues
  • Visual art (e.g. prints, sculpture, paintings, photos, textiles)
  • Storytelling

Please be aware that we are not looking for highly-polished pieces, but something that will provoke and encourage a “chain reaction” and inspire others’ creativity.

Deadline for proposals is 5pm on Mon 25 January 2021.

How to Enter

To apply, please fill out the online form here. The form asks you to include a written proposal about your piece (max. 200 words), plus a link to an example of your work. Please remember that this is just the proposal submission, not the final piece. Deadline for proposals is 5pm on 25 January 2021.

Terms and Conditions

Chain Reactions is open to anyone based in Yorkshire, aged 18 years and over. The proposed piece must be original work.

The applicant will retain the copyright to their work; however, successful Stage 1 applicants must agree that Ilkley Literature Festival will have the unrestricted right to publish the finished piece or its digital reproduction, e.g. video or photographic images, on ILF’s website and social media channels and to retain a copy of the work for archival purposes.

Selection Process

The selection process is being run by our partners Playful Being. Five proposals will be selected to produce Stage 1 provocations. The successful applicants will be informed by 27 January 2021. If your proposal is selected, you will have until 10 Feb 2021 to make and submit your piece. Stage 2 will launch in the middle of Feb 2021.

This deadline has been extended from Mon 11 Jan to the date stipulated above.

Please be aware that during the creative process, you may receive feedback and suggested alterations to ensure that the final piece is compatible with our requirements.

Please Note

By submitting an application, applicants indicate they agree to all the terms stated above.
