D2. The Walter Swan Lecture: Clara Barley – The Moss House

Clara Barley’s novel reimagines the story of neighbouring Yorkshire landowners, Anne Lister and Ann Walker, who find themselves entwined in a passionate, forbidden relationship and retreat to Moss House, their private sanctuary away from an unaccepting world.

The extraordinary life of Anne Lister has inspired several contemporary writers, including Sally Wainwright’s BBC TV series Gentleman Jack. During his career, Walter Swan also often wrote about the rich and fascinating people and places of Yorkshire.
