36. Gregory Radick: Darwin’s Emotional Evolution
In 1872, Charles Darwin published The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, transforming the full range of human emotional expressions, from perky smiles to sulky pouts, into evidence for evolution. His search for that evidence led him to recruit a colourful team of expert observers, from zoological gardens and physiology laboratories but also insane asylums, art photography studios and colonial outposts. Historian Gregory Radick tells the story behind this extraordinary and enigmatic book – a book in which Darwin’s own emotional life played a surprising and decisive role.
