Writing Folk Horror Fiction with Andrew Michael Hurley

This workshop will focus on writing setting and landscape, which lies at the heart of folk horror. You’ll learn why setting is so crucial to the genre, how to choose a suitable setting, capture it on the page, create atmosphere, suspense and uncanniness and even how your setting can become a character in itself.

Andrew Michael Hurley is a Lancashire-based writer whose first novel, The Loney, won the Costa Best First Novel Award and the Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was translated into twenty languages. The film adaptation of Hurley’s novel Starve Acre starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark was released in 2024. His most recent book is Saltwash. Hurley was crowned the ‘new master of menace’ by the Sunday Times and his writing has drawn praise from Stephen King.
