77. Sanam Mahloudji & Nussaibah Younis: Seriously Funny

Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlisted writers Sanam Mahloudji and Nussaibah Younis discuss how their razor-sharp debut novels balance serious social and political subjects with deliciously dark humour. Mahloudji’s enormously entertaining The Persians follows five women from three generations of a once eminent Iranian family as their lives are turned upside down by revolutions personal and political. Younis’s wildly funny Fundamentally follows Nadia, an academic tasked with rehabilitating ISIS women who becomes obsessed with saving fifteen-year-old East Londoner Sara, whether Sara wants to be saved or not.
