In 1958, a small bear from Peru was introduced to the British public. Inspired by creator Michael Bond’s memories of displaced Jewish children during World War II, A Bear Called Paddington was a parable for treating refugees with kindness. Six decades later, the marmalade-lover’s legacy has evolved. Paddington is now a motion picture superstar and an avatar for Britishness. Melanie Ramdarshan Bold, Professor of Youth Literature and Culture at Glasgow University, analyses Paddington’s transformation, raising questions about migration, assimilation, tolerance and national identity.
