70. Ian McMillan: Red River Valley
Ian McMillan, one of Britain’s most treasured living poets, returns to Ilkley with his new collection, Red River Valley. Writing from family life, everyday surrealism, and the effect of austerity on the village near Barnsley where he’s lived all his life, McMillan plays with language and form, writing for the page and the ear at the same time. After all these years as a writer and broadcaster, he’s still trying to find his voice; maybe it’s in Red River Valley, his dad’s favourite song.
Ian McMillan is a writer and broadcaster who presents The Verb on BBC Radio 4 and for some years, its sister programme The Adverb. He hosts the annual T.S.Eliot Prize Readings. He's written poems, plays, a verse autobiography Talking Myself Home and a voyage round Yorkshire in Neither Nowt Nor Summat. His latest book with Adlard Coles is My Sand Life, My Pebble Life, a memoir of a childhood and the sea. Ian’s most recent collection is To Fold The Evening Star – New and Selected Poems (Carcanet). His new collection Red River Valley (Carcanet) is published this month.
