85. Michelle Anya Anjirbag: Cinderella – A Cultural History
Why does Cinderella, one of the oldest fairy tales, still have such resonance to this day? A glass slipper, a fairy godmother, a transformed pumpkin, lizard footmen and seamstress mice: these familiar images evoke a very particular story, one where hopes and dreams for a new life might come true. Versions of this story can be found in the earliest illustrated books, through to modern children’s fiction and contemporary films. Michelle Anya Anjirbag, a scholar of children’s literature, folk and fairytales, draws connections between older and newer versions of Cinderella, and shows us why its appeal endures.
